The Blue Sky pact had been announced in May 2025 and was seen as a strategic realignment for both carriers and JetBlue in particular, as it had been struggling to find opportunities to grow since its previous Northeast Alliance (NEA) with American Airlines dissolved. Although the new partnership will face pushback, it will likely make consumers in the fiercely competitive US airline market richer in options and benefits.
The Controversy Surrounding Blue Sky
Though the DOT’s stamp of approval on the Blue Sky partnership between JetBlue and United Airlines is a significant victory for both airlines, it has faced its share of controversy. Spirit Airlines filed a formal objection to the venture in June 2025, saying the move would lead to less competition and hurt consumers by concentrating too much market power in the hands of two major airlines. Spirit described the partnership as one that would keep JetBlue a “de facto vassal member” of United, undercutting the competition it purports to promote.

One of the most substantial parts of the Blue Sky agreement is a proposed slots and timing swap between United Airlines and JetBlue at the New York region’s largest airports. United Airlines will relinquish slots at JFK, resulting in up to seven new daily round-trip flights originating from JFK Terminal 6. Operations are projected to begin in 2027. Those slots will help United have a bigger footprint at one of the busiest airports in the United States and offer users more flights and destination options travelers flying in and out of New York.
