The foreign ministers of India and China have had a crucial meeting during a Group of 20 conferences in New Delhi. The meeting has marked a significant improvement in their relationship, which has been tense since 2020.

The talks between Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and his Chinese counterpart, Qin Gang, have focused on addressing current challenges to their bilateral relationship, especially peace and tranquillity in the border areas.

Jaishankar stated that there are real problems in the relationship that need to be discussed very openly and candidly. Qin expressed that China attaches great importance to India and maintaining good ties between the two nations is fundamental to their interests.

The relationship between India and China deteriorated in 2020 when fighting broke out between Indian and Chinese soldiers along their land border in the Ladakh region.

The standoff began in May 2020 when a scuffle broke out between Indian and Chinese soldiers at Pangong Lake, resulting in injuries.

Tensions intensified in June 2020 when 20 Indian soldiers and an undisclosed number of Chinese troops were killed in hand-to-hand combat. Despite 17 rounds of talks between Indian and Chinese military commanders, the standoff has continued.
