Ignore the Polls. The 2024 GOP Race Remains Wide Open

Last week's Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Oxon Hill, Maryland, highlighted the fluidity of the potential 2024 Republican Party presidential nominee field. While many seem to be focused on a two-way race between Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, some argue that this race is far from decided. Trump, although a brand with global awareness, leaves many true conservatives in the party bewildered. Meanwhile, DeSantis is attempting to outflank Trump on culture wars, but it's unclear whether his feud with Disney is winning him, supporters.

For those campaigning for rank-and-file Republicans, Trump's brash style of "MAGA trolling" isn't part of the playbook. Instead, former Speaker Paul Ryan seeks to reboot the party with policies and ideas, and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is trying to save the GOP from another Trump-era repeat. Although CPAC highlights Trump's influence over the Republican Party, some are hoping for alternative candidates to emerge in 2024. It is possible for someone still polling in single digits to emerge atop the field and take the Republican nomination. Despite Trump's loud voice in the party, it's not necessarily a stand-in for where the party's actual voters are.
