LONDON — The Premier League has postponed its upcoming round of matches as a mark of respect following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, adding to the cancellation of high-profile golf, cricket and horse racing events across Britain on Friday.

In a statement, the Premier League writes that during a meeting on Friday morning, it was decided to postpone all Premier League games on September 10th and 11th. The intention was to pay due respect to Queen Elizabeth II after her death on Thursday evening: "To honour her extraordinary life and contribution to the nation and as a sign of respect, the Premier League round will be postponed from this weekend.

In England, not only football rests at the weekend. Other sporting events have also been cancelled. The PGA golf tournament in Wentworth was interrupted and suspended at least for Friday. Horse racing and the national rugby league have also been postponed or cancelled. The Tour of Britain, a cycling race, ended prematurely on Thursday after five stages.
