Children who have outlived their parents... A report on the children of immigrants to Switzerland

A Swiss study suggests that children of immigrants generally do better academically than their parents.

In a recent study by a Swiss media outlet, the educational attainment of 24,000 immigrants was compared to that of their children.

In particular, data on immigrants to Switzerland from Germany, France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Turkey, Serbia, Macedonia and Kosovo were analyzed.

Then, it was revealed that the children were better in education than their parents.

For example, while immigrants left school at age 15 or 16, their children were educated until age 18 or 19. That is, almost 60 percent of the children had completed the second level of education. 32 percent of the children had completed university education.

After leaving their home country and coming to another country, the children had overcome the obstacles they faced like prejudice and language problems and improved their education.

However, the study also found that there were differences between countries in terms of improvement in educational attainment.

For example, while 54 percent of children of immigrants from Germany had completed a degree or equivalent education, only 20 percent of immigrants from Kosovo had attained a degree.

Researchers believe that the reason for this may be the length of time the children's parents have been living in Switzerland. For example, people from countries such as Kosovo, known as the Balkan Community, have recently migrated to Switzerland. Therefore, their children may not be able to achieve that much in education because they have problems with language etc.

In addition, it is also considered that problems such as discrimination faced by them in school due to the fact that they are children of immigrants from another country may hinder their progress in education.
