The European Union has banned Russian aircraft from flying over its airspace.
The European Union announced the airspace ban against Russia in February over its invasion of Ukraine. Nearly half a year after the European Union closed its airspace to flights from Russia, 10 Russian-owned or Russian-controlled planes were stranded in Germany, according to media reports."Because the planes are banned from taking off and flying due to EU sanctions, they cannot be used by their owner and cannot be relocated," Germany's transport ministry said.
Three Russian Antonov AN-124 aircraft are grounded at Leipzig, a Bombardier jet and a Boeing 737 are at Cologne, and a Boeing 747 is at Frankfurt-Hahn Airport. Four more jets are at the airport in the southwestern city of Baden-Baden, media agency dpa said in a statement on Sunday. In response to its attack on Ukraine, the EU closed its airspace to Russia in late February.
